I’ve never had an Oreck, but my sister has,and she loved it.
You could check out a Consumer’s Guide (magazine or website) to find some ratings on various brands.
I currently have a Dirt Devil bagless, and it cleans well and has good suction. However, as careful as I am when I dump the cannister, it gets my allergies going and I start sneezing and sniffling. Lol! The bagless vacuum cleaners seem to be the most popular, and they are reasonalby priced.
I’d say any “name” brand – Hoover, Dirt Devil, etc. would suffice just for general cleaning and every day use.

I love my Dyson!!! After having owned other reputable brands, they are the best, hands down!
First of all, I like that you don’t have to mess with bags and replacing bands. It’s a very smart yet simple design so it’s easy to empty the canister, use the extensions, etc.
Easy to maintain – My daughter and I have long hair and it gets wrapped around the brushes at the bottom… With other vacuumns, it was a pain to take the screws out and pull off the brushes and clean them. The brush on the Dyson is easy to pop out and replace. (When I get in the mood for sewing, I get thread wrapped up in there too.)
We have a dog… The last vacuumn we owned was a Hoover. The belt broke and we ended up at Sears buying our Dyson. You would not believe how much old hair and dust was still in the carpet. We had this house built so we were the only ones that had lived in it. The carpet looked fine on the surface but we couldn’t believe how much dirt/dust had gotten trapped deep within.
The first few times you use it, you’ll have to empty the canister out every few minutes or so. The suction is incredible and you won’t believe how yucky your carpet really is.
We’ve owned ours for 4 years now… It still runs like it did the day we bought it. If for some reason we ever had to replace it (someone stealing it?), we would definitely buy another. The price can be a bit steep at first but considering that we haven’t had to run out and buy bags or belts in 4 years, it is worth it!
Hope this helps,
Mon 🙂

EDIT: About emptying the canister, you don’t ever come into contact with the dust bunnies and junk. There is a trigger at the top and I aim the bottom directly into the trash can. I’m allergic to dust to that feature is very important to me.
A good friend of mine is a vacuum repair person and she swears that the bagless vacuums are the worst product that has come along in a long time. She has people bringing them in all the time where the motor has burned up. This is mainly caused by not replacing the filter as often as it needs to be but they can be very expensive and so people don’t replace them.
The only vacuum that she’ll sell in her shop is the Simplicity. It’s a little more than I can afford right now so I’ve stuck with my Dirt Devil. I love it, I have a dog and I have dust related allergies and my Dirt Devil works great for me. It picks up the dog hair and keeps the dust in check.
Don’t buy an Orek. They don’t last. Mom had problems with hers, and I hated the professional model I used when working as a janitor.
oreck is a good sweeper but not worth the price, i have had much better luck with electrolux, a little more money but in the end its worth it
i have a oreck and i like it
