We have a Dyson and love it. We also have a smaller compact Kenmore canister type to do the baseboards and corners of the walls, etc. that only cost us $ 39.00 with attachments, on sale. It doesn’t take bags and both vacuums are 99.9% dust filtered.

I am a big fan of the Kirby. Love mine!
OK I am in LOVE with my roomba Vaccum. I bought mine off amazon. The great thing about it is you can schedule it to clean certain sections of the house at night while you are sleeping if the room is not near your bedroom. The roomba cleans a fairly large room before needing to be recharged and emptied. It is so smart it even goes and puts itself on it’s charger when the battery is low. My dog hates it but we love it.
We have a Dyson (purple one for pet hair) and it is awesome….picks up everything…with 2 cats and a dog we have tons of pet hair…this thing works great.
Miele
People that own Dysons, Miele, Kirby’s, etc. do you think they are going to say they hate them after spending $ 500 to $ 2000 on it? Kirby is the better of the ultra expensive models in the upright category but they are heavy so if you need to lug it up the stairs be prepared to get a workout. The Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive is a great vacuum for about $ 300, the Hoover Windtunnel 2 at about $ 250is very good, and the Eureka Boss Smart at only $ 150 is a good vacuum (I’ve used these and they work great on all types of flooring). I’m sure people love their Dysons and other high end brands but just like in the appliance world where you can buy a Viking gas range that cost $ 8000, doesn’t mean it is going to make you a better pot roast.
Just following the posts here and some are pretty funny. Remember, you are cleaning your home, not a casino, you probably don’t have commercial grade carpet, and have a much smaller amount of square feet to vacuum than a hotel or casino so why buy something that isn’t necessary and spend the extra money?
We have a Dyson and I haven’t regretted spending the money for one minute!! It’s amazing!
I got mine on Amazon.com and it was remanufactured… got a great deal!
Well, since you are used to a certain type of quality (electrolux was the best for it’s time); you would probably want a machine that has the same type of quality. Hoovers, Eurekas, and Dirt Devils don’t cut the quality standard. The nicest upright around is the Sebo X-4 Extra. It is used in 30% of every commercial application around the world. It is used in Hershey’s Hotel, the Contemporary in Disney, Caesar’s Palace. In fact 3 out of every 4 casino’s use this vacuum. Why because it is a high quality, extremely user friendly, dummy-proof machine (I am not calling you a dummy it is just created so you can’t mess anything up). When the bag is full, it shuts down to tell you you need to cahnge the bag. When the bristles are worn a light goes on telling you it is time for you to change the bag. When you clog it, it shuts down so you can’t overheat it. If it clogs, you can look through the hose, wands, bottom of the machine, everywhere so you can unclog it no matter what. It can go flat to get under furniture and beds. When you go on different carpet heights, it adjusts automatically to the height of that carpet using a motor that brings the machine up and down for the perfect height. It is amazing because you can go straight onto bare wood floors and you don’t neeed to touch a thing it will adjust automatically itself! The tools are very accessible just pull out the wands they are right there in front of you! (Nothing to attach or remove). IT also has hospital grade filtration which is really nice if you have allergies or asthma (Eureka’s and Hoover’s do not filter anything). It really is an incredible machine. I got mine from Mr. Vac and Mrs. Sew for only $ 549 (It sells for $ 749 everywhere on the Internet) with free shipping and no tax (because I do not live in new york). They were wonderful to deal with and they made my shopping experience a pleasant one. Here is their number (you have to call them up to get that price because that price can not be found anywhere on the Internet):

Tell Lisa and Joe Kevin told you about it.
we have a kirby gen 4 and love it
We have a family member who’s a sucker for just about any salesman that pulls up to the door. She has bought two Orecks, one Kirby and some other one that she paid over a 1000.00 for . The Kirby is far better than any. They just made a new addition that is lighter but it too is still heavy. Not sure you don’t need it to produce good suction. I do like that Oreck . It’s so light and it’s a little bear. But the Kirby does perform the best. The Oreck is great for the price.
I spend 40-60.00 about every other year on some upright, usually dirt devil or hoover. When I’m no longer satisfied w/it, I give it to the good will and buy a new one. I’ve had expensive ones in the past-Rainbow, Electrolux, blah, blah, blah. They’re great early on, but after 2-3 years, they start having issues just like the cheap ones. I had a bagless windtunnel type when they first came out. I hated it. Those “great hepa filters” were a pain in the butt – nasty, and messy to empty/clean. Then I’d spend enough $ $ on it, that when it stopped working as well as I preferred, I hated to get rid of it. I have to admit, I’d like to have an orek, or one of those little robot-types, but I don’t want to spend the $ $ on it-especially when I only have carpet in 3 1/2 room in my home.
