changing vacuum belt?

I have a hoover vacuum windtunnel. the belt broke and i went to the store and purchased a new one (yes im positive it is the right belt). i placed it in the vacuum and it broke within a matter of seconds. is there something im missing or maybe i can loosen?.

Far and away the most common mistake customers make when installing a new belt on their upright vacuums is that they pinch the belt between the belt race on the agitator and the cutout area of the housing, (where the belt lays to clear the housing and turn the agitator), when reinstalling the agitator. Then they put the bottom plate back on, and start the vac. With the belt pinched, it can’t turn the agitator, and doesn’t move itself, so the motor burns through the belt in about 20 seconds, usually followed by a burning rubber smell. Odds are that’s your problem.
